FOTD - Royal Sugar

Just a quick one today. We've been having a run of bad news recently, well, not so much us, but people we care very much about. Either way, it sucks, but we're all trying to remain positive.

In the spirit of that, here is a rather bright FOTD featuring Sugarpill Royal Sugar chromalust.

FOTD - Feeling blue

I'm not particularly happy with how this turned out, but I wanted to post it anyway because I've not posted many blue looks. I'm getting back into blue shadows after quite a long time not wearing them, I guess I'll just have to keep practising!

Product Raves - Revlon Colorstay

Today’s rave is on my favourite foundation – Revlon Colorstay.

This costs around £12.50 and is available at Boots, Superdrug etc.

I LOVE this foundation. It provides medium to full coverage without looking mask like, it’s available in formulations for both dry and oily skin and the finish is flawless.

To compare it to another foundation, I’d say the coverage and formula is pretty similar to MAC studio fix fluid. However, Colorstay is more affordable, the pale shades run less orange and I’ve heard of far fewer cases of people breaking out from this foundation.

The range of shades available in the UK at the moment isn’t going to suit everyone, and I really hope they extend the range in future. Luckily, “Ivory” is pretty much a perfect match for my skin.

I stipple this on using my E.L.F studio flat top powder brush and work in layers depending on how much coverage I want. Please note that this product does dry pretty quickly, so you need to work fast. Other than that, this is HG for me.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

FOTD - copper and burgundy glitz

This is the look I did to go for coffee on Saturday. It's one of my favourite out of all the looks I've been doing recently!

Product Raves - Boots 17 Photo Flawless Eye Pencil (Black-gold)

This is the start of my “Product Raves” series. I noticed that there are products I’ve been using a lot recently which I don’t want to do a full review on, but that warrant a little bit more detail than just being featured in a monthly favourites post.

First up is Boots 17 Photo Flawless eye pencil in black-gold.

These pencils cost a mere £2.89 and are available at Boots stores and on the Boots.com website.

I’ve been wearing a lot of bronze/brown eye looks recently, and this wonder pencil has featured in most of them. The Boots website describes the photo flawless pencils as being “black with a twist of pearlescent colour”, but this is really just a beautiful bronze liner.

I don’t use pencil liners very often, mainly because my lids are quite oily AND they’re hooded, so anything even remotely creamy transfers within moments, but not this pencil! It doesn’t set instantly, and there is enough time for you to smudge it a bit, but once this is on it does not budge. I wore this to a wedding recently and my make-up was on for twelve hours, including throughout a rather weepy speech and the consumption of several glasses of wine. At the end of the night, my eye make-up looked exactly the same as when I first applied it.

I've been using this to line my upper lash line instead of liquid liner, and I really love the softer look it gives.

I also have these pencils in the blue and green shades but I haven’t had chance to give them a proper road test yet.

In the meantime, if you see this in Boots, I urge you to pick one up!

I am alive!!! (+ a FOTD dump)

Hi guys! I'm so sorry that I haven't posted for over a month, and that I didn't get around to doing the give away I promised. Please understand that other things have had to take priority over the last few weeks. It's not something I feel the need to discuss here, but rest assured, I had good reason to take a break. I'm not going to make promises regarding how often I will publish new posts, but it will be as often as possible!

On that note, what kind of posts would you like to see in the future? More FOTD'S? Reviews? Something completely different? I was also wondering if you'd like me to do the small give away I had planned, or wait until I have 200 followers and do a much bigger give away? Let me know what you think either by commenting or mailing me at notamakeupsnob@gmail.com

Onwards to the FOTD dump! I'm afraid I can't remember the products I used for these looks, but what the hell! Enjoy :)

My guest post on Turtle Beauty + what's coming up on notamakeupsnob....

Hello!

I fear that this is becoming routine, but again, I'm sorry for not being around much lately. I've recently started an MA with the Open University, and balancing 16 hours a week of study on top of my existing responsibilities is proving to be a bit of a juggling act!

However, I did get the chance to do a guest post for Wendy (the picture above is a sneaky peek), so head on over here if you want to take a look at my FOTD featuring Evil Shades, Darling Girl and The Chequered Lily. Whilst you're there, do familiarise yourself with Wendy's blog if you haven't already. She does amazing FOTD and OOTD posts and her reviews are really informative.

I'm also over the moon to see that I'm now over 100 followers on GFC! I never imagined that even one person would be interested in my posts, so that is just amazing! As promised, I will be hosting a small give away to celebrate this milestone. I will post the details and how to enter on Sunday, so make sure to check back.

I've also been working on my review of Kiss My Sass cosmetics, which should be up before the weekend.

I'll be spending the next couple of days catching up with your comments and reading all the blog posts I've missed.

Hope you're all enjoying Autumn so far :)

My top ten tips to save your time, money and sanity!

Just a quick text only post to share some of the tips and tricks I've picked up during my many years as a make-up addict!

1. If you have oily or hooded lids (I have both), but enjoy wearing thick, winged eyeliner on occasion, apply a primer such as UDDP all over your eyelid and the area you will draw your wing. This stops your liner from transferring and helps the winged part stay in place for longer.

2. Styling your hair into an updo, quiff, victory rolls etc, is much easier if your hair isn’t squeaky clean. If you’ve just washed your hair, spray in a bit of dry shampoo to make it more matte and easier to work with.

3. Use a small, stiff make-up brush dipped in nail polish remover to tidy up any mistakes when you paint your nails. I use the E.L.F. regular line concealer brush and it works a charm.

4. To avoid the dreaded fallout when you wear glitter, instead of applying some sort of “glue” or mixing medium to your lid and then pressing on the glitter, mix the glitter with the glue or medium and then apply. No more sparkly explosions on your face.

5. If I see a gorgeous FOTD pic when browsing beauty blogs etc, I save it to my computer in a make-up inspiration folder. Within that folder, I have several sub-folders for blue looks/dramatic/sparkly and so on. If I’m in a make-up rut, but know I want to work with orange shades, I just open my orange folder and get inspired!

6. If you plan on heading out make-up shopping, pack a small packet of wet wipes so that you can clean your hand between swatching.

7. Avoid a messy lip line when wearing very dramatic or dark colours by tidying up the edge with a bit of your concealer.

8. E.L.F. elements quad compacts are exactly the right size for MAC eye shadows and they have a cute little mirror. They might not look as sleek as the MAC quads, but they can easily be decorated with stickers and the like, and for a measly £1.50, who can complain?

9. I would not be without my trusty tube of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant. This stuff is an absolute life saver, and can be used on everything from chapped lips to minor burns and abrasions. If I get a patch of very dry skin on my face during the winter, I pop a bit of eight hour cream on before I go to bed, and by the time I wake up my skin is lovely and soft again.

10. Use your brow highlight colour to help blend out your crease and lid colours – I begin by patting the colour on to the brow bone (I usually use my MAC studio fix powder) then using whatever is left on the brush to work over my crease/lid shade in small circular movements.

Phew! I hope that you found some of these tips helpful. Please feel free to share your own top tips in the comments of this post.

Indie Review: The Chequered Lily

I plan on doing lots of reviews of Indie companies, but here is the first!

Summary
Available at - The Chequered Lily
Price - $5 (approx. £3.29) for a full size eye shadow. Sample sizes currently unavailable.
Shipping - $2.90 + $0.25 for each additional item within the US, $3.35 + $0.40 for each additional item everywhere else.

FOTD Sugarpill Goldilux

I make no secret of the fact that Sugarpill's Goldilux is my all time favourite gold eye shadow. Nothing I have ever tried comes close to the beautiful, gold foil effect you can achieve with this shadow. Some people recommend using it wet, but I honestly think it looks just as good dry, on top of a primer. I pack this on with my E.L.F. Studio eye shadow C brush, and I never have problems with fallout. If you love gold, I promise that you will not be disappointed.

Product list and another picture under the jump!

NOTD - Illamasqua JoMina and Kleancolor purple chunky holo

This is my favourite nail combo I've tried in a long time!

If you love sparkly or holo nail polishes, I strongly suggest checking out the kleancolor chunky holos. I picked up the full set as well as a matte topcoat for about £20 including shipping on e-bay.

I was thinking about writing a post dedicated to these polishes, would you guys be interested in that?

My top four lip combos

I am definitely a lover of lip products. I love the feeling of wearing gloss or lipstick, and my make-up doesn’t feel finished until I’ve done my lips. As a self-confessed lip product junkie, I decided I would share my top four lip combos with you. I say “combo” because I usually wear a lipstick AND a gloss. I find that layering adds a bit more interest to any lip look, and as I keep saying, I am a lip product junkie! Keep reading to find out what my favourite products are for nude, coral, pink and red lips.

Before I get down to the nitty gritty, I just want to remind you that the products I use are not the only products you can use to achieve these looks. Nope, they’re just the products that I use at the moment. I believe that only two of the products I talk about are now discontinued, but you can easily find dupes if you do a bit of research. Onwards!

A little bit of housekeeping......

Sorry for the text only post, but I wanted to say a few things and let you know what is coming up soon on notamakeupsnob..........

Hello to my new followers!
I never really imagined that anybody would read my blog, so to have 83 followers on Google Friend Connect is amazing! I genuinely appreciate each and every one of you, and your comments and support inspire me to work harder to make my blog better. I will be hosting a give away when I reach 100 followers, so stay tuned for details!

You've got mail
I now have an e-mail address set up just for my blog. If you have any suggestions for future posts, or just want to say hello, please feel free to drop me a line at notamakeupsnob@gmail.com

Comments
I'm ashamed to admit that I am terrible at keeping up with comments. For this, I apologise profusely. Over the next week or so, I will be setting up Disqus on my blog, so that I can respond directly to individual comments. Please don't ever assume that I don't read and appreciate your comments, because I read every single one. I'm just a very disorganised, forgetful person!

Reviews
After making a fair bit on e-bay selling various bits and bobs, I went on a bit of a buying spree. Luckily, this means I have lots of indie reviews in store for you. I'm waiting on a few orders at the moment, but as soon as my postman delivers all my goodies, I will be reviewing the following companies....

Darling Girl
Detrivore
Black Rose Minerals
Evil Shades
Kiss My Sass
The Chequered Lily (Etsy)
Spectrum Cosmetics (Etsy)

Before you say it, no, I am not made of money. But there have been some AMAZING sales on recently, and like I said, E-bay has been very kind to me of late ;)

Upcoming Posts
As well as the reviews mentioned above, I also have the following posts lined up .........

August favourites (late, I know!)
My top four lip combos
A "What's in my bag" post
A mixed up pin-up girl look
Lots of FOTD's
Amazing blogs you should check out
Two looks using the MUA Pro Heaven and Earth Palette
Two looks using the MUA Pro Dusk til Dawn Palette

I am also working on a collaborative series with the gorgeous Amii of Of Steel and Lace. We're still ironing out the details at the moment, but it's going to be lots of fun, I'm sure. In the meantime, go and check out her fab blog, especially if you're of the alternative persuasion.

Right, I think that's pretty much everything! I have a lot of "real life" stuff coming up, including a visit from my Ma and Pa, and starting an MA in Childhood and Youth! Don't worry if I'm a bit quieter than usual, I'll just be trying to slot everything into a new routine. I'll be scheduling plenty of posts so my blog won't turn into a ghost town.

Hope you're all well!

Sleek Saturday - Monaco Palette

I’m very excited to be participating in Liloo’s Sleek Saturday for the first time! Head on over to Le petit jardin de liloo to see who else is involved this week.

For my first Sleek Saturday, I decided to use the Monaco palette. As a hardened make-up junkie, I am quite ashamed to admit that I swatched this palette and then never even looked at it again until now. Luckily, I have now found that I actually really like the palette, and have several looks in mind for the future. The matte shades in this palette are really fab – buttery smooth and very pigmented. This is quite unusual for mattes, as they are notoriously difficult to blend, but not so with this palette!

FOTD Dramatic drag look

Firstly, I want you to know that I did not leave the house like this. Even I have my limits! I was watching a film and decided to have a play around with a dramatic, almost drag look. It’s not something I would wear to go to Tesco, but I think it would be fine for the right gig or club night.

You can’t see all the glitter I used in these pictures, particularly on the eyebrows. But trust me, it was there.
I’m also surprised by how much I like the lips in these pictures. Normally, I’m just not a dark lips girl, but I’ve been having a play around and I’m starting to find dark lip looks I feel comfortable with.
Carry on reading for another picture and a list of products.

Spotlight on: NYX Cosmetics

I want to start this post by stating that I am aware that NYX have joined the “Epic sale fail” club along with Sleek. I understand that many customers were treated badly and due to this, you may decide not to purchase NYX products. I have never ordered directly from NYX myself, so I have not experienced these problems. I am a big fan of several NYX products and whilst I do not approve of mistreating customers, I will continue to purchase NYX from third party retailers. In other words, this is not the place to start drama. I simply wanted to write a post giving people who are yet to try NYX a bit more information.

NYX cosmetics are big news in the states but comparatively much less well known in the UK. However, as a result of the beauty blogging community, NYX products are popping up in Youtube videos and blog posts everywhere. I decided to write a spotlight post on NYX to give you a bit more information on a brand which carries some amazing products at very competitive prices.

Make-up and Jewellery organisation

So, those of you who follow me on Twitter may know that last week we got a new bed! When you get to my age, this is a very exciting event. We decided to take the opportunity to rearrange the entire room. Not only does it look much better, but I also completely changed my make-up organisation and it is now all safely stored in my dressing table.

I thought I'd show you a few pictures of how I've got it all stored, just in case you want to do something similar.

FOTD Lazy eyes and purple lips

OK, two things - Firstly, "Hello!" to my new followers! I'm so happy to have you on board and it means so much to me that you read my posts and comment. I'm sorry I'm not always quick at responding to comments, but I do get round to it eventually. I plan on having a give-away when I reach 100 GFC followers, so keep your eyes peeled!

Secondly, I understand that during these terrible times in London and across the country, it seems trivial to post about make-up. I sincerely hope that those of you in London are safe and that you and your friends/family are out of harm’s way. However, in the interests of trying to maintain a bit of normality, here is my FOTD from last Friday night when we went to a friend's place to watch DVD's.

I call this "lazy eyes" because when I can't be bothered to think about how to do my eye shadow, I just reach for my Naked palette. I used just two colours but I really like the result. I really do recommend this palette, even if you normally wear bright colours like I do. It's great to have in your collection for times when bright make-up isn't appropriate, or you just can't be bothered! You can still create some quite dramatic looks with it, though.

More pictures and product list after the jump!

Normal posting will resume shortly......

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let you know that I have a few posts written up and ready to go. I've not posted them today because it just doesn't seem appropriate with all the rioting. I don't want people to feel as though I am trivialising the current situation by posting about make-up. I am absolutely heartbroken for the people who have been affected by this absolutely inexcusable behaviour.

I will start posting again when it feels right. I know the world should not come to an end because of these people, we can't let them win. I also know that maybe some people are in need of some frivolous light relief. Today just didn't feel like the right day.

In the meantime, please stay safe and look after each other.

I hope tomorrow brings a brighter day for the people of Britain.

High Voltage Cosmetics

This is the first of these posts I have had to publish, and I hope it will also be the last.

Although I personally experienced no problems ordering from High Voltage cosmetics, it has been brought to my attention that a substantial amount of people have experienced problems.

In light of this information, I feel it would be irresponsible of me to continue to support and recommend this company.

I have disabled comments on this post and I respectfully ask that you take discussion of this subject elsewhere as I do not wish to be involved in any sort of drama.

If you are one of the people affected by poor customer service on behalf of HV, a facebook group has been started here so you can discuss any issues with people in the same situation.

I will continue to wholeheartedly support the indie cosmetics community and I hope that stories like this don't put people off ordering from the numerous reputable companies out there.

Just a quick FOTD today! This was meant to be posted over the weekend, but the fella and I have been very busy!

I'm back!

Hey guys!

I'm so, so sorry for my absence. To cut a long story short, I've been having some health problems as well as doing lots of travelling recently. I'm back now (no more travelling up and down until mid October-yay!) and have an appointment coming up with a surgical consultant, so hopefully, I'll be back to normal very soon.

I have several posts planned including my five minute face routine, favourite products from June and July, and an E.L.F. 50% off sale haul and first impressions.

I really hope you're all doing well, and I'd love it if you check back to see my new posts.

If you have any suggestions for future posts, just leave me a comment :)

An apology and a FOTD

Hey guys! First of all, I'd like to say hello *waves* and a massive thank you to my 12 followers! There may only be a few of you but I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to look at my blog. Please feel free to comment and let me know what you think so far/what you would like to see in the future.

Secondly, I just wanted to say sorry for the lack of updates. It's been a very busy week for me and an ongoing health condition has been making me feel pretty lousy. However, I'll be adding more posts over the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.

Here is a FOTD from a couple of days ago. Product list after the jump :)

Past FOTD's

I'm afraid I can't tell you what products I used in any of these looks, but I thought it might be nice for you to get an idea of the kind of make-up I like to do. I'm going to try and post FOTD's quite frequently, and in future, I will always list everything used.

More after the jump!

Spotlight on: Illamasqua

I’ve decided to do a series of blog posts focussing on specific make-up companies/brands. Each post will give a little bit of background on the company, products they’re well known for and products I personally recommend. I’ll also mention products I wouldn’t really advise parting with your money for and any other snippets of info I think you might want to know. I’ll be covering well known mainstream brands as well as drugstore gems and indie companies. First up, Illamasqua!

Favourite products from the month of May 2011

Revlon Photoready
This is my favourite foundation at the moment. It’s a product you either love or hate, but I most definitely love it. It gives me just the right amount of coverage, the shade “vanilla” is a great match for me and I love the way it feels on my skin.

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to my little space in the world wide web. I thought it would be best to tell you a little bit about myself and what you can expect from my blog.
My name is Jessie and I’m 28 years old. Although I’m a northerner originally, I now live on the South East coast of England with my wonderful fiancĂ©. I am completely and utterly obsessed with all things beauty! I see make-up primarily as a hobby, although I am qualified in special effects and media make-up, and have worked on photo shoots, theatrical productions and independent films.
